Dehydrating

I know this is a short post but had some questions and wanted to see if any of you had any answers! I have become intrigued with dehydrating foods. I have been watching youtube videos and love the idea of not using the electricity of a freezer and dehydrating fruits, veggies, ect! I also like the idea of my kids having healthier snacks like those fruits and veggies that I have dehydrated. Do any of you dehydrate?? What are your experiences with it? What kind of dehydrator do you have? Any certain one you would recommend?? On other news we are looking for a boyfriend for Happy our rabbit. :) We are going to breed her and start a meat rabbit operation. We are excited but also nervous! We are trying to do what we can with where we live and this is one thing we can do. Do any of you have rabbit operations? Any advice? Well I hope you all have a great day! ~ Katie

  1. Oh, how fun! I started dehydrating in earnest almost a year ago. I already had a Nesco dehydrator, but after watching the videos from Dehydrate2Store, I KNEW I was going to jump in. I usually do not do that. I try things with what I have to make sure I stick with it. But I knew, that I knew, that I knew :-) So we went and bought an Excalibur. Can we say, "awesome"? Love it, love it. I just found out that the Nesco sells screens for their trays. I didn't realize that, which is why I wasn't using it to its full potential. I would say if money is an issue you could totally work with a cheaper brand. My Nesco came with the fan on top, making it easier to clean (I've heard some have the fan on the bottom, which is a pain to clean as the food can drip juices on the fan as they are drying). I also bought a FoodSaver to store our food for longer term. If you haven't seen Dehydrate2Stores videos, check them out. THey have a site (by the same name I gave) and you can find their videos on youtube as well. Also, Wardeh from GNOWFGLINS just started an online dehydrating class. You can jump in at any time. There is a fee.

I think if you are serious about wanting to dehydrate then you will be very pleased with your endeavor. I've made fruit yogurt "candy" that my kids gobbled down! Fruit roll ups go quick too. I'm having a lot of fun trying out new things. Just dehydrated a can of pumpkin that I only needed a small amount from. I knew it would not be used in time if left in the fridge. So I spread it on my dehydrator trays. Now I have powdered pumpkin (to put in a yummy hot cocoa recipe I saw on one of these blog hops ;-)). Anyways, good luck with your decision.

Oh, as a PS...if you make your own yogurt the Excalibur is wonderful for incubating the cultures. I used to be pretty spotty at making yogurt as it seemed like suce a production to get out my cooler and wrap up my jars to insulate them. But, I suppose that just might be me!!! Ha, ha!

    Blessings,
    Kerri
